Carbon Dating or Radiocarbon Dating
Carbon dating, also known as radiocarbon dating, is a scientific method used to determine the age of organic materials by measuring the amount of the radioactive isotope Carbon-14 (¹⁴C) remaining in them.
How It Works
- Living organisms continuously absorb Carbon-14 from the atmosphere through respiration or food.
- After an organism dies, it stops absorbing Carbon-14.
- The Carbon-14 in its remains gradually decays into Nitrogen-14 at a known rate.
- By measuring the remaining Carbon-14, scientists can estimate how long ago the organism died.
Half-Life
- The half-life of Carbon-14 is 5,730 years.
- Carbon dating is generally effective for dating samples up to 50,000–60,000 years old.

Limitations
- Cannot be used to date rocks, minerals, or fossils that are millions of years old, as they no longer contain measurable Carbon-14.
- Suitable only for materials that were once living.
