Carbon Dating or Radiocarbon Dating

Carbon dating, also known as radiocarbon dating, is a scientific method used to determine the age of organic materials by measuring the amount of the radioactive isotope Carbon-14 (¹⁴C) remaining in them.

How It Works

  • Living organisms continuously absorb Carbon-14 from the atmosphere through respiration or food.
  • After an organism dies, it stops absorbing Carbon-14.
  • The Carbon-14 in its remains gradually decays into Nitrogen-14 at a known rate.
  • By measuring the remaining Carbon-14, scientists can estimate how long ago the organism died.

Half-Life

  • The half-life of Carbon-14 is 5,730 years.
  • Carbon dating is generally effective for dating samples up to 50,000–60,000 years old.

Limitations
