Share

In a significant milestone for wetland conservation, Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh has been officially designated as India’s 101st Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The announcement was made by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, making Glaw Lake the first Ramsar Site in Arunachal Pradesh.

The designation recognises the lake’s outstanding ecological value and reinforces India’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable management of wetlands.

What is a Ramsar Site?

A Ramsar Site is a wetland designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty adopted in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran. The Convention aims to conserve wetlands and promote their wise and sustainable use through national action and international cooperation.

India became a Contracting Party to the Ramsar Convention in 1982.
