Site Finalised for Garo Hills’ First Doppler Weather Radar (DWR)

Why in News?

The site for the first Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in the Garo Hills region has been finalised at Albella Chidekgre village in Rongram C&RD Block, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. The project, being implemented under the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in coordination with the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), is expected to significantly strengthen weather forecasting and disaster preparedness in western Meghalaya. Installation work is expected to begin shortly.

Key Highlights

  • Location: Albella Chidekgre village, Rongram C&RD Block, West Garo Hills.
  • Agency: India Meteorological Department (IMD), with support from MSDMA and DDMA.
  • Significance: First Doppler Weather Radar dedicated to the Garo Hills region.
  • The site was finalised after a joint inspection involving IMD officials, district authorities, and local stakeholders.
  • Consent of the Nokma (traditional village head) and local residents was obtained, ensuring community participation in the project.
  • The installation forms part of efforts to strengthen weather monitoring and disaster risk reduction in Meghalaya.

What is a Doppler Weather Radar (DWR)?

A Doppler Weather Radar is a remote sensing system that uses microwave radio waves to detect precipitation and measure the speed and direction of moving weather systems using the Doppler Effect.

It can monitor:

  • Rainfall intensity
  • Thunderstorms
  • Lightning-associated weather systems
  • Wind speed and direction
  • Cyclones
  • Hailstorms
  • Cloud movement

Importance for Garo Hills

The Garo Hills region frequently experiences:

  • Heavy monsoon rainfall
  • Flash floods
  • Landslides
  • Thunderstorms
  • Strong winds

The new DWR will:

  • Improve real-time weather monitoring.
  • Provide village-level early warnings.
  • Enhance disaster preparedness and response.
  • Support farmers with better weather forecasts.
  • Improve aviation and public safety.
  • Fill an important gap in Meghalaya’s meteorological infrastructure.

Mission Mausam

The Doppler Weather Radar installation is part of Mission Mausam, a Government of India initiative aimed at modernising India’s weather forecasting capabilities.

Objectives of Mission Mausam

  • Improve weather forecasting accuracy.
  • Expand the Doppler Weather Radar network.
  • Strengthen early warning systems for extreme weather events.
  • Support agriculture, disaster management, aviation, and water resource planning.
  • Build climate resilience against increasing extreme weather events.

About the India Meteorological Department (IMD)

  • Established: 1875
  • Ministry: Ministry of Earth Sciences
  • Headquarters: New Delhi
  • Functions:
    • Weather forecasting
    • Cyclone warnings
    • Seismology
    • Climate monitoring
    • Agrometeorological services
    • Disaster early warning systems

Significance for Meghalaya

Disaster Management

  • Faster warnings for floods, landslides, and severe storms.
  • Better coordination among disaster management agencies.

Agriculture

  • Improved advisories on sowing, irrigation, and harvesting.

Climate Monitoring

  • Enhanced collection of weather data for climate research.

Public Safety

  • More accurate alerts can reduce loss of life and property during extreme weather events.
